The “Snakes on a Shamrock” name comes from the Irish legend that St. Patrick himself banished all of the snakes from Ireland into the sea after they attacked him while he was in the middle of a 40-day fast. However, modern science has discovered that post-glacial Ireland never had snakes to begin with because of its geographic nature -- it’s an island.
Couple that legend with Samuel L. Jackson’s kickass movie “Snakes on a Plane!” and the most prevalent of Irish symbols for St. Patrick’s Day, The Shamrock, and you have a beer name that is just frickin’ sweet.
Now the actual beer we’ve brewed here is based on an Irish Red Ale style which is the predominant style in the style guidelines but it lends itself to much interpretation. Including reformulating the recipe to be a LAGER. The recipe is very simple but makes for a very quaffable and flavorful beer because of the way Oliver designed it.
It is made with mostly Pale Ale malt which is one of the more hearty of base malts. We used Flaked Rice for about 15% of the recipe to lighten the body and then used Crystal malts to give the beer a nice soft sweetness that is not cloying whatsoever. Top it off with a splash of Roasted malt and Amber malt to give the SOaS its deep ruby hues which border on brown, but when held up to the light are unquestionably red.
We used German Magnum hops just for bittering to balance out the soft malt sweetness so lend no aroma and/or hop flavor. This was done purposefully as we intend this beer to be uber easy to drink with lots of flavors.
This beer will pair well with rich, flavorful foods as it won’t interfere with the taste of the food and won’t bog you down because it is very light-medium bodied.
